Work Instruction Translation & Re-design

Re-designing a factory floor work instruction

How the project started

A friend-of-a-friend had a factory work instruction that needed translating. At the time AI translation tools were not yet usable for this kind of technical content, so I got the chance to take the first translation job.

Along the way, beyond translating the original procedure into English, I also re-built the Excel version into a read-only document the client could actually share.

Pain point

  • The work instruction was maintained in Excel, but the final version that gets handed out to operators is hard to convert to PDF. Passing the Excel file around directly leads to version drift and gets harder to maintain over time.
  • On top of that, Excel reads left-to-right. Even with step numbers, the reading order is hard to follow.

Visual shows the redesign pattern, not the original content.

Outcome

A dense document, turned into a readable information architecture (infographic).
